Gopal, a farmer, goes to
the market to buy a
rooster for his farm.
After some searching, he
finds a suitable one and
buys it. He then purchases
a bag of grain as
feed for the rooster and
the hens on the farm.
His purchases done, he is about to leave
the market when he spots a man selling a
fierce-looking dog. Remembering that he
needs a watchdog for the farm, he buys
the dog after some bargaining. He then
sets off for home, leading the dog and carrying
the rooster and the bag of grain.
Now, he faces a problem. To reach his village,
he has to cross a
river. There is a bridge,
but can bear only limited
weight. So, he can take
only one item with him
at a time.
The problem is, he cannot
leave the dog alone
with the rooster on the
bank, because the dog would probably
attack the rooster and kill it. Nor can he
leave the rooster with the bag of grain,
because the rooster would eat up the
grain!
So, how can he cross the
bridge and reach home with
all his possessions intact?
Solution:
Gopal formulates a foolproof plan of action. First, he takes the rooster and crosses the bridge, leaving the dog and the bag of grain on the bank. On reaching the opposite side, he leaves the rooster on the bank and returns for the dog. He takes the dog across, leaves it on the (opposite) bank and then comes back, carrying the rooster with him. Next, he leaves the rooster on this bank, picks up the bag of grain and carries it across the bridge. Leaving it near the dog on the opposite bank, he returns yet again for the rooster and makes a final trip across, carrying it! Thus, everything is safely across.
